Coat & Nail Care

For dogs with musculoskeletal conditions

Providing a health-focused groom for dogs with musculoskeletal conditions goes far beyond basic grooming skills. It's not just about the act of grooming or being a proficient groomer.

This task requires a health professionals knowledge of canine anatomy, understanding of joint pathologies, knowing the muscle locations and functions, be familiar with musculoskeletal injuries, and how these injuries or pathologies impact the dog’s passive and active ranges of motion. It requires a good understanding of cooperative care and force-free techniques to be able to handle such dogs in an ethical, compassionate way. Dog’s body physical and mental limitations should be respected in all ways.

Health-focused grooming for dogs with musculoskeletal issues blends professional grooming expertise with positive reinforcement handling and a deep understanding of canine anatomy and these specific health challenges. This combination ensures a safe, positive, and genuinely therapeutic grooming experience for dogs facing debilitating conditions.

This includes severe degenerative osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, tendon and ligament injuries, luxating patella, nerve injury, discopathy, etc. A cavoodle with Grade 3 or Grade 4 luxating patella or a hip dysplasia still needs to be groomed. Otherwise, it creates another health problems such as matting, and this, in turn, adds more pain to the already existing pain. Regular nail care for dogs that suffer from musculoskeletal conditions is vital and even more important than for healthy dogs. If not done frequently or properly, the dog’s gait will be affected resulting in addition of more strain to the joints and tissues that are already compromised.

“Canine arthritis management topic isn’t just important – it is vital. This goes beyond a caregiver or a professional. This is about advocacy. It is about being a voice for animals who can’t tell you they’re hurting. Chronic pain affects 1 in 5 humans worldwide – we know it can have the same devastating impact on animals. So, thank you. Thank you for caring, for showing up, and for joining us.”
